What were the major battles of the American Civil War? A few hallowed battlefield sites, such as Gettysburg and Shiloh, immediately come to mind as places where Union soldiers and secessionist rebels of the Confederate States of America faced off in the war that shook the young nation to its core.
But the conflict, which began when rebels bombarded Fort Sumter in South Carolina in April 1861, was far bigger and bloodier in scope. Over four years, Union and Confederate forces met in more than 10,000 armed confrontations across the nation, ranging from small clashes to full-scale battles involving tens of thousands of soldiers, in locations from Vermont to Arizona.
